MORE ABOUT SURFACE DRYNESS/DEHYDRATED SKIN
Causes of surface dryness:
- Environmental factors: Cold and dry air, especially in winter, can pull moisture out of the skin.
- Drying skincare products: For example, strong cleansers or exfoliating products can strip the skin’s natural oils.
- Excessive cleansing: Washing the face too often or with hot water can dry out the skin.
- Incorrect skincare: Using products that don’t suit your skin type or condition, especially those containing drying alcohols or strong fragrances.
- Lack of moisturizing products: Not moisturizing enough can cause the skin to become moisture-deficient and unbalanced.
How to combat surface dryness:
- Moisturize regularly: Use moisturizing skincare products suited to your skin type. For surface dryness, it’s important to use products that both hydrate and help retain moisture in the skin. Look for ingredients like:
a. Hyaluronic acid: Binds moisture to the skin and helps maintain elasticity.
b. Glycerin: Draws moisture into the skin.
c. Ceramides: Strengthen the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss. - Use gentle cleansing: Choose a mild, pH-balanced cleanser. Avoid cleansers that foam a lot, as they can be too drying.
- Exfoliate gently: To remove dead skin cells and improve moisture absorption, exfoliate with a mild exfoliant such as an enzyme peel or products containing gentle AHA and/or PHA acids. Avoid harsh mechanical exfoliants with large grains, as these can irritate surface dry skin.
- Use facial oil: If the skin is very surface dry, add a few drops of facial oil (such as jojoba oil, sunflower oil, or squalane) on top of your moisturizer for extra nourishment and protection.
- Protect skin from weather: When it’s cold or dry outside, protect your skin by applying a richer cream that acts as a protective layer. Use a scarf or similar to shield your face from harsh wind and cold.
- Avoid hot water: Wash your face with lukewarm water instead of hot, as hot water can strip the skin’s natural oils and make it drier.
- Drink plenty of water: Keeping your body hydrated from within helps the skin maintain its moisture balance.
Skincare tips for surface dry skin:
- Use hydrating serums: A serum with hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed yeast extract, or other moisture-binding ingredients can help maximize skin hydration before applying moisturizer.
- Layering method: Apply thin layers of products to build up the moisture barrier. Start with a hydrating serum, followed by a light moisturizer, and possibly an oil or richer cream if the skin is very dry.
- Overnight mask: Using a moisturizing overnight mask once or twice a week can provide extra nourishment and hydration while you sleep.
- Hydrating mist: A facial mist with moisturizing ingredients can be used during the day for quick hydration when the skin feels tight or dry.
By following these tips, you can improve your skin’s moisture balance and gently combat surface dryness.
