MORE ABOUT SKADAD HUDBARRIÄR
Signs of a compromised skin barrier
- Visible redness
- Dryness and flaking
- Increased sensitivity to products
- Tightness or discomfort
Common causes of a compromised skin barrier
- Over-exfoliation (too frequent or strong acids/physical scrubs)
- Use of overly drying cleansers
- Environmental factors (extreme cold, heat, or low humidity)
- Stress and lack of sleep
- Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
- UV exposure
Tips to help support and restore the skin barrier
- Reduce or pause exfoliation
Overuse of acids such as AHA and BHA may weaken the skin barrier. Consider pausing until the skin feels more balanced, and reintroduce gradually. - Use gentle cleansers
Avoid harsh cleansers that strip natural oils. Choose a mild, hydrating cleanser with a pH close to the skin’s natural level (around 5.5). - Moisturize with barrier-supporting ingredients
Ingredients such as ceramides, oat, and fatty acids can help support the skin barrier. Look for formulas with hyaluronic acid, squalane, and glycerin to help retain moisture. - Protect from UV exposure
Daily sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is essential, as UV exposure can further compromise the skin barrier. - Avoid very hot showers
Hot water may further disrupt the skin barrier. Use lukewarm water and limit shower time. - Incorporate facial oils
Oils such as squalane, jojoba, avocado, or sunflower oil may help lock in moisture and support the skin’s protective function without clogging pores. - Use soothing skincare
Ingredients such as niacinamide (vitamin B3) and turmeric may help reduce the appearance of redness and support the skin barrier. Other soothing ingredients include ceramides, aloe vera, oat extract, and licorice root.
By keeping your skincare routine simple and avoiding overly harsh products, the skin can gradually recover. Consistency and patience are key – restoring the skin barrier may take several weeks or longer depending on individual skin conditions.
